ORDER OF ST BENEDICT     OSB

COMMUNITY OF ST MARY AT THE CROSS, Edgware

With its dedication to St Mary at the Cross, this community has a special vocation to stand with Christ's Mother beside those who suffer. From its earliest days in Shoreditch, where Mother Monnica Skinner and Revd Henry Nihill worked together as co-founders, the sisters were drawn to the desperately poor and sick people around them. Awareness of the needs of many 'incurable children', led to the building of a hospital, marking the beginning of the community's life work.

Time passes and needs change; over the years the community's work has evolved to meet the present needs of elderly frail people for nursing or residential care. This care provision continues in Henry Nihill House at Edgware Abbey, where Residents enjoy close links with the community, its worship and its life.

From its foundation, the heart of the community's vocation lay in prayer; the Divine Office and the Eucharist were and are central to its life, love finding its expression in a care for those in need. Today many people are welcomed at the abbey, finding there a place of peace; all are offered Benedictine hospitality and given space for rest and renewal, with the opportunity to share in the community's worship.
