COMMUNITY OF ST FRANCIS   CSF

EUROPEAN PROVINCE

As Franciscan sisters, an autonomous part of the Society of St Francis, our primary vocation is to live the gospel in our time and in the places to which we are called.  The setting for this is our life in community, under vows.  Our wide range of backgrounds, abilities and gifts contributes to many ways of expressing the three elements of prayer, study and work.  Prayer together and alone, with the Eucharist having a central place, is the heart of each house and each sister’s life.  Five of our sisters are priests; and three live the solitary life.  Study nurtures our spiritual life and enables and enriches our ministries.  Work includes the practical running of our houses and a wide range of ministries; currently these include hospitality, spiritual direction, prison chaplaincy, parish work and missions, preaching, leading quiet days and retreats, writing, being a presence in poor urban areas, nursing, and work with deaf blind people.  Some of this work is salaried, much is voluntary.  Each new sister brings her unique gifts, adding a new dimension to our life.  As we move on into our second century, we are excited by the challenge of living the Franciscan life in the twenty-first century.

AMERICAN PROVINCE

The Sisters came to the United States in 1974, and for over thirty years we have engaged in many types of ministry, but with special concern for the poor, the marginalized, and the sick. We can be found in hospitals and nursing homes; among the homeless, immigrants, and people with AIDS; teaching student deacons and serving on diocesan commissions; providing spiritual direction and directing retreats in parishes. In all things we strive to be instruments of God’s love.
