COMMUNITY OF ST JOHN THE DIVINE CSJD
The last thirty years have been a time of enormous evolutionary change within our Community. In the last five years, we have been studying in greater depth the essence of the Religious Life, so that we have wisdom and courage to go on further developing new patterns for living our life, that fit the culture of our time, and sharing it with others.
Those coming to test their vocation in CSJD need to be women and men not afraid of the Community’s exploration. Whilst the essence of Religious life is safeguarded and its intrinsic values remain the same, our lifestyle is changing significantly. We are praying there will be those who feel God calling them to a possible vocation in the Religious Life, who would be interested and challenged and like to know more. We would be delighted to meet you.
We are a centre of prayer within the diocese reflecting older examples of living the Religious Life from earlier centuries, when Religious Houses were generous in sharing their life. We are a small Community living in the heart of a multicultural city here in Birmingham. The core Community forms the welcoming centre for a growing number of Associates, Alongsiders and others who share much of our life. Our Associates have a very close relationship with the Community. The programme for Alongsiders has now been running for some eight years and continues to be valued by those seriously wanting to deepen their spiritual life, or by those who for a variety of reasons need time and space to consider significant issues in their life.
Together our vision is to be: a growing centre of prayer within the Diocese; to exercise a ministry of hospitality to the many who come, either as individuals or as groups; to offer spiritual accompaniment; and to be more open to new ways in which God might use us here. New ministries are opening up such as building friendships with our Muslim neighbours, and in complementary therapies such as reflexology. All of our ministries seek to reflect something of the ethos of our Community, which has broadened to cover all aspects of health, healing, reconciliation and pastoral care in its widest context, ministries that all seek in helping people find wholeness. The underpinning of our life and work is a spirituality based on St John, the Apostle of love.
